Novak Djokovic faced Cameron Norrie in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Italian Open. Novak Djokovic came out victorious with a score of 6-3, 6-4, thus qualifying for the quarter-finals of the tournament. The match lasted for an hour and a half.
Novak Djokovic was not impressed by the actions of Cameron Norrie during the match. Norrie smashed the ball on Djokovic’s foot during the second set. The British player immediately apologized, but it did not stop Djokovic from staring at him for a while. The Serbian was also upset by some other actions of his opponent.
Cameron Norrie was fist-bumping after every point. Djokovic was especially unhappy that his opponent took a medical timeout right before the last game of the match. Former World No.1, Andy Roddick, expressed his views about Norrie’s actions while speaking to Tennis Channel. He felt that none of the players were wrong and had reasons for their actions.
“It’s fair play. Norrie has every right to do what he wants and Novak has every right to not like it,” he said. “He wasn’t breaking any rules. I’ve gotten in trouble for criticizing people for taking medical timeouts a little too often.”, Roddick added.
Andy Roddick said that the tennis world should not really think much of it, as Norrie was just trying to win more points by doing things differently. He added that both players were right in their actions, and people should not look down upon Norrie. Roddick believes that the Britisher did what he had to do, and Djokovic also has every right to complain about his opponent’s actions.
