A recent survey of amateurs vs professionals in tennis has got Andy Roddick completely shocked. In a chat with Tennis Channel a funny statistic came up which made both Andy Roddick and Andrea Petkovic laugh and ponder about the solidity of the numbers presented.
The survey focused on whether amateurs could win against professionals in a game. The results showed that a majority, 71%, believed that they could achieve this feat. Notably, a striking 82% of participants aged 18 to 24 were confident in their ability to take a set from a professional player.
The survey results continued to unfold, revealing intriguing insights. Among participants aged 55 and older, 47% believed they could triumph against a professional player. Interestingly, 20% of Americans shared this self-assured sentiment. In light of these findings, Andy Roddick was asked to share his thoughts on the survey results.
“This is insane. If I had the amount of confidence the people surveyed has then I would have won 17 Wimbledons. There is no chance. In 2005 I had played a Ohio University Intramural because he was writing a book on what would it take to beat a professional,” Roddick said
“I’d beat him with a frying pan,” Roddick said. “If you haven’t played Division 1 tennis you cannot take a game of Novak Djokovic. I am a 40 year old sitting here and I’ll tell you that I can’t take a game of Djokovic if I play right now.”
Roddick’s reaction to the survey was one of disbelief, describing it as utterly irrational. He emphasized that defeating a WTA or ATP professional tennis player requires far more than just confidence; it demands an exceptional level of skill and experience. Roddick stated that he personally wouldn’t stand a chance against players of Novak Djokovic‘s caliber at this stage in his career.
I won’t let anyone win a point says Andrea Petkovic
The statistics comparing amateurs and professionals left even Andrea Petkovic bewildered. She too laughed it off by saying, “I love playing with amateurs. When we are just knocking they feel that it is easy and they can win easily. When the actual match starts and we play points, I don’t let them take a point as well. First of all I was a professional tennis player. I am extremely competitive.”
“I am not going to give you a point for free. That’s number 1. Number 2 is I would want to put people in their place where they belong. Your place is not one point, one game,”
Petkovic adopted a straightforward stance, asserting that no amateur could even win a single point against her. Her competitive drive and determination shine through as she adamantly refuses to concede any victory.
