American tennis icon Andy Roddick has recently spoken about the monumental rise of Carlos Alcaraz but also believes that despite everything, Djokovic is still the best player in the world. Alcaraz started the year outside the Top 30 and ended it as the youngest World No.1. He also won the US Open along with a couple of Masters tournaments.

Speaking to Tennis Channel, Roddick said that Alcaraz’s rise has been meteoric and also claimed that he passes the eye test for someone who is going to win many majors in the future. He lauded him for becoming the World No.1 at such a young age but also added that nobody can deny that Djokovic is the best player in the world currently.

This kid’s rise has been meteoric and he obviously passes the eye test for somebody who is going to win majors. To get to number one that quickly is a different story. As we look forward to next year, I think you will be hard-pressed to find somebody who doesn’t think Novak Djokovic is the best player in the world,” Roddick said.

Roddick further said that Alcaraz’s year-end World No.1 ranking is well deserved and described the feat as something unbelievable to watch. He wished that he was in Turin for the ATP Finals but also added that he has a long future ahead. In the end, he said that Alcaraz has been a great gift to tennis, in general.

“But the number one ranking is Carlos Alcaraz’s. It’s well deserved. It was unbelievable to watch this year. I wish he was in Turin (at the ATP Finals) this week mixing it up with these phenomenal players but we want health. He has a long career ahead of him. What a gift to the game Alcaraz has been,” Roddick said.

Alcaraz’s season was over at the Paris Masters and he was ruled out of the ATP Finals due to an abdomen tear. Reportedly, he won’t compete at any buildup tournaments in the Australian summer and will directly enter the Australian Open as the top seed.
