Technology has played a very important role in sports, especially tennis. Out of the four grand slams, Wimbledon and the French Open are the only ones that still use line judges. The US Open and Australian Open have integrated automated calls into their systems; however, the other two prefer tradition over technology. As the surface of the French Open is clay, the mark of the ball is usually notable, so automated calls are not a necessity for it, but as Wimbledon is played on grass, it becomes difficult to take calls. Andy Roddick recently wrote in his new blog for Betway that Wimbledon should do away with line judges as human error is inevitable.
Roddick shared his feelings regarding the topic after the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andy Murray. He said that he was not too much in favour of technology, but too many obvious mistakes were being made at Wimbledon this year. He wrote, “I know a lot of people are like, It’s tradition. That’s how it’s always been. We also used to rent videotapes from Blockbuster in the past.”
He was also irritated about the fact that players had to decide whether to use Hawkeye or not. He also opined, “The player shouldn’t have to do the referee’s job while trying to navigate the game. It’s not something you should be worried about.”
The Murray-Tsitsipas match was intense, and every point counted. Murray was crushed after finding out that one of his returns at a crucial point was in and not out, as the umpire declared. At 4-4, 15-30, in the fourth set, Murray’s return was called out, and he didn’t challenge it. If he had gotten the right call, he probably could have gotten two potential breakpoints. In reality, sadly, Murray lost, and Tsitsipas went on to win 7-6 (3), 6-7 (2), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Andy Roddick is one of the greatest tennis stars from the United States. Had it not been for Roger Federer in the early 2000s, Roddick could have added a couple more Grand Slam titles to his name.
The former World No. 1 has now become the ambassador for Betway. The move has fans disappointed and furious. Betway is an online sports betting company where Roddick will offer his expert opinions and insight on tennis.
This news has been met with a lot of disapproval and criticism as the company promotes gambling and betting. Tennis players have often been harassed and maligned by gamblers. One such example would be Borna Coric, who had to delete his social media accounts as he was being abused by gamblers after his loss in Toronto.
