It wasn’t a pleasant final for Anhelina Kalinina. Playing an extremely tough opponent in Elena Rybakina, she knew it was going to be an uphill task. Rybakina eventually won the title, her second 1000 points tournament of the year. She beat her opponent 6-4 1-0 (ret).
Kalinina wasn’t able to compete in the entire match. This was due to the physical issues she started facing at the end of the first set. 1-0 in the second set and she gave it to the Kazakhstani. She came off three back-to-back 3 set drainers. There was no doubt that Kalinina was going to eventually burn out.
However, in all this, she didn’t fail to acknowledge the capabilities of Rybakina. Both have come a long way. Years back, both aces would compete against each other in 25 K Tournaments.
In her post-match press conference, she was asked about Rybakina and her love for the Kazakhastani was clear. “I remember we were playing 25K in China many years ago. I cannot say, but it’s like of course the time period maybe of, I don’t know, seven, eight years. But she’s very young. She improved I think all her aspects, she made them very consistent. She’s much more powerful. Amazing power, fitness, everything.”
Kalinina further went on to declare Rybakina as the next No. 1. The Ukranian said, “She’s amazing player, top player. I am sure if she’s going to do like this, maybe new world No. 1 for sure.” Kalinina certainly believes that Rybakina has the potential to cross Iga Swiatek. She believes the No. 1 ranking is around the corner for the Kazakhstani.
What’s next in order for Elena Rybakina?
A near-perfect start to the season was just the cake Rybakina wanted. Finals in Melbourne, Indian Wells, Miami, and Rome have been the hallmark. Winning two of the 4 top events will boost her confidence. However, the icing on the cake can come later this month.
Her eyes now will be on Paris. She would love to lift the French Open. If she manages to lift the trophy in Paris, this will be her second Grand Slam win after Wimbledon last year. What will make it special is that both wins would be on contrasting surfaces.
A deep run in Paris will push her up the rankings. And with more success on the tour, No. 1 will be in sight. The pressure of a Grand Slam will be different for sure. Expectations will be high. Rybakina would want to be as cool as possible. She will have to battle her way though, as the draw is never going to be an easy one with everyone targeting the elusive trophy.
