As the controversy of Carlos Alcaraz taking pills mid-match at the US Open rises, the saga continues. This time, the Spaniard’s video went viral where he is spotted taking an unknown substance in the Cincinnati Masters final against Novak Djokovic. Another video of the same stature goes viral. The tennis world is comparing the Spanish young gun with Djokovic when the Serb received a drink mid-match in 2020.
Alcaraz was handed some liquids from his team when he was playing in the Cincinnati Masters final. This match was quite the thriller, with neither player willing to play it down. When he was 6-5 up in the final set, he got some unknown substances from his box which were given to him through a ball boy. Even though he ultimately lost in the tight-necked battle against Djokovic, this event did not go unnoticed by the tennis world.
Since all of this took place in the public eye, it is unlikely to be picked up by the International Tennis Integration Agency. However, it fails to go unacknowledged by the tennis audience. Fans claim that since everything was given to him in clear, transparent containers, there was nothing to hide and there is nothing nefarious going on. However, some people claim that there was not much scrutiny since it was Alcaraz who it concerned.
With the World No.1 being constantly compared to Novak Djokovic and compatriot Rafael Nadal, this particular analogy was not one he needed. Alcaraz has seen tremendous success in the past few years. This directly and indirectly puts him under immense media and public scrutiny.
Carlos Alcaraz eases into the fourth round of US Open
Alcaraz brushed past Dan Evans to secure himself a spot in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. He defeated the 26th-seeded Briton in a score of 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The Spaniard is set to face Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round.
Carlos, on his campaign to defend his crown, is on the final step to enter the quarter-final. With two Grand Slam titles over the course of a year, he is arguably in his best form. The 22-year-old Italian, on the other hand, reached his career-highest ranking of World No.61 this year.
Both players will hope to play their best tennis. Arnaldi will try to be the toughest competitor to the Spaniard and try to stop him in his tracks. The Spaniard, however, will try to defend his title.
