World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka has been chasing after the No.1 spot for a while. A spot that is currently being held by Pole Iga Swiatek. However, with the Upcoming US Open, the Belarussian has the perfect opportunity to march past Swiatek in the rankings.
In a press conference, Sabalenka was asked if she thinks about the battle for the best when stepping onto the court and if she needs to push these thoughts aside. To this, she replied, “Well, I don’t need to push it on the side because this is not something I’m really thinking during the tournament, during the matches.”
However, she also acknowledged the fact that she is aware of the close-cut battle between the two. She said, while she knows well enough that with the US Open comes the opportunity to snag the No. 1 ranking, there is more work to be done. “I’m, like, focusing on myself more than on the ranking. I know that if I’ll bring my best tennis, if I’ll do my best, I know that I’m able to do that,” said Sabalenka.
Iga Swiatek currently holds the No. 1 rank with a total of 9955 points. Aryna Sabalenka, however, comes in second place with 8746 points. However, if she does win the US Open, she will be able to overtake Swiatek in the battle.
