With the ongoing WTA Finals already at the business end, the hunt for the last four spots gets even more exciting. On Thursday, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was bound to play Elena Rybakina for a successful qualification to the next round. But just when the second set of the match was getting to the end, rain hit the stadium causing a slight delay to the match and ultimately the game got postponed to the next playing date.
With Sabalenka already picking up the first set by 6-2 and Elena Rybakina trying to come back into the match by leading the second set by 5-3, fans were glued to their seats to find out who would make it out of the Bacalar Group. But after several rain delays, the suspension of the match was imminent and the match will resume today with Sabalenka hoping to get the job done as soon as possible.
But the schedule for Friday looks a lot busier as games from the Chetumal Group are also set to take place on the way. With all four players still having their semi-final hopes alive, it is going to be a treat of a tennis day. Iga Swiatek will be taking on Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff will look to bank on her impressive form when she locks horns against Marketa Vondrousova.
How do the semi-final hopes look for the candidates:
With only one spot confirmed among the four semi-final spots for this year’s WTA Finals, the race is still very wide open. With all set to be decided on Friday, tournament favorites Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek will look to book their place at the semis. But with that being said, things are not that easy for the top three players in women’s tennis at the moment.
Swiatek will be taking on Ons Jabeur who is on blistering form after her great victory over Vandrousova last match and if the Czech star managed to beat Gauff in her last match, things can get really interesting in the Chetumal Group. While in the Bacalar group, Pegula has already booked her place in the semis, and a win over Sakkari in her last place will guarantee a top-spot finish with the winner of the Sabalenka-Rybakina match set to head for the second spot.
