Aryna Sabalenka scripts history in Melbourne

All the celebrations and dances are worth it because Aryna Sabalenka scripted history with her title-winning performance in Melbourne. As she beat Qinwen Zheng on Saturday, Sabalenka became the first back-to-back AO champion since Victoria Azarenka won in 2012 and 2013 and the second player in the Open era to win her first two majors in Melbourne.

Sabalenka not only won the title but did it in some style. The 25-year-old did not drop a set in en route to her title win. The world No.2 won 84 percent of first-serve points and saved each of the four break points she faced on her way to the title win. It is the most dominant performance in an AO women’s singles final since Azarenka dropped just three games against Maria Sharapova in 2012.

Despite dominating her opponent, Sabalenka was humble and appreciative of Zheng. Sabalenka lauded the 21-year-old Chinese player and claimed that she would soon win a Grand Slam title.

I know this feeling, it’s really tough to lose in the final, but you’re such an incredible player, you’re such a young girl and you’re going to be in many more finals and you’re going to get it
Aryna Sabalenka said. (H/T: Australian Open)

Notably, Qinwen Zheng played her maiden Grand Slam final and will also break into the top 10 when the new ratings are made live.
