Coco Gauff is all set to lock horns with Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals of the 2024 Australian Open, scheduled on Thursday (January 25th). Ahead of the clash, Sabalenka expressed her eagerness to play against the 19-year-old.

Sabalenka breezed past Barbora Krejcikova in the quarter-final in straight sets with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-3. All of her victories in the previous rounds came in straight sets.

Gauff, on the other hand, almost saved herself from losing to Marta Kostyuk in her quarter-final match. The Ukranian gave a tough fight to the teenager but in the end, Gauff took the final set to win with a score of 7-6(8-6), 6-7(3-7), 6-2.

Gauff previously defeated the Belarusian at a Grand Slam stage last year. The defeat came in the final of the US Open, which awarded Gauff her first Grand Slam title after winning with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. As both the players are all set to face each other in another major event, Sabalenka expressed that she is happy to play against Gauff again.

Before her win over Barbora Krejcikova, Aryna Sabalenka eliminated the likes of Ella Seidel, Brenda Fruhvirtova, Lesia Tsurenko (against whom Sabalenka won after clinching her maiden double bagel), and Amanda Anisimova. On the other hand, Gauff defeated Anna Karolina, Caroline Dolehide, Alycia Parks, Magdalena Frech, and Marta Kostyuk, before securing a berth in the semi-final to play against Sabalenka.

The Australian Open semi-finals will be their seventh meeting in their career. Sabalenka and Gauff have played against each other six times, with the latter winning four of them. So Gauff leads the head-to-head record 4-2.

Their previous encounter was at the 2023 US Open, which the American won. Before that, the two locked horns at the 2023 Indian Wells quarter-finals, where Sabalenka emerged victorious in straight sets.

Gauff has won one Grand Slam title so far, while Sabalenka also has one Grand Slam title. She became the winner of the 2023 Australian Open by beating Elena Rybakina in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. So both of them are eyeing their second Grand Slam title.
