The 2023 French Open is off to an incredible start in the semi-finals. World No. 2 and second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka went head-to-head against World No. 43 Karolina Muchova. With Sabalenka enjoying a great season, she was the favorite going into the tie. Muchova however surprised everyone including Sabalenka to win the match 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-5.

Muchova and Sabalenka battled for three hours and 13 minutes before the Czech came out on top. In the process, she saved a match point as well to reach her maiden Major final. Sabalenka won the second set tiebreaker and took a 5-2 lead in the third to almost seal the match. Muchova had not given up and won five straight games to clinch the win.

Sabalenka had her destiny in hand in reaching the World No. 1. A win today would have boosted her chances as she had to win the French Open to reach the summit. With the defeat however, she now has to pray Iga Swiatek ends up losing her semi-final against Beatriz Haddad Maia, or else the Pole retains the top rank. As for Muchova, she is into the Top-20 and title on Saturday can see her break into the Top-10.

With a lead of three games and a match point, it was a shocking performance by Aryna Sabalenka to concede the match. While her demons haunted her in 2022, she had improved quite well this season. She already has overtaken her match-win count of last season with the 2023 season half left. Despite her form, her going down so easily triggered reactions from fans who roasted her for bottling the match.

Sabalenka was looked upon as a worthy candidate to dethrone Swiatek from the top of the rankings. Earning fans after her title run at the 2023 Australian Open, the Belarusian has certainly upset fans with her dismal performance in the last half hour of the match. Muchova will however be delighted to get the result as she wins a step closer to maiden Major. Having exited the tournament last year crying in pain, she had tears of joy today and it was certainly well deserved.
