In a recent interview with SportKlub, former World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka said that she is grateful for being friends with tennis great Novak Djokovic. Talking about her game and the prospect of her winning, she said that she hopes and will try her best that both the former number ones can match each other by being at the top of their rankings at the end of the tournament.
In January, the Belarusian won the Australian Open and claimed her position at the top of the WTA rankings. But eventually, Polish player Iga Swiatek surpassed her and reclaimed her position as world number 1. This grass court season, there has been a lot of anticipation to see a final match between both of these players. And it seems like Sabalenka is taking some advice from her good friend Djokovic.
Talking to SportKulb she said, “Its good to be friends with such legend and you can learn from him a lot. So I am really appreciative for the all advises he gave me.” She praised him for winning Wimbledon four times in a row and believes that SW19 is the Serb’s favorite slam.
The friendship between the Belarusian and the Serb has been garnering attention for a while now. A few days back, Sabalenka posted a picture with Djokovic on her main Instagram account and captioned it “24 GS in one pic. Guess how many of them is mine? ???”. The post got many lovely reactions from the fans.
Will Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka share the top ranking at the end of the tournament?
Both Sabalenka and Djokovic have maintained their winning streaks in SW19. While it had been rather easy for the Belarusian, Djokovic had struggled to overcome tiebreakers in all of his matches. Both the prominent personalities had a pretty good year, with Sabalenka winning the AO and Djokovic winning both the AO and Roland Garros, they still have to look out for many obstacles in their games ahead.
Djokovic has a pretty good grip on the grass courts. He has won seven Wimbledon singles titles, with the last four coming in consecutive years. He has great agility on the grass and knows how to triumph over his opponents. But his biggest hurdle is going to be getting past the current World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz. The young sensation looks confident on the court and is by far the only one who can pose a danger to the Serb.
Sabalenka, on the other hand, has made her comeback on the grass court after two years. Last year, the Belarusian couldn’t play due to the ban imposed on Russian and Belarusian players by the All-England Club. Back in 2021, her form was exceptional on the court, and she easily reached the quarterfinals. But unfortunately lost to world number 6 Ons Jabeur. This season, her form looks great, but she has many obstacles in her way. Two, to be precise: Iga Swiatek and defending champion Elena Ryabkina.
It will be great to see how both these players overcome these challenges and make their way towards the golden trophy.
