Belarusian tennis ace Aryna Sabalenka bagged her second Grand Slam title on Saturday when she won the trophy at the 2024 Australian Open. Entering the tournament as the defending champion, Sabalenka did not drop a single set and successfully defended her crown in Melbourne. She beat China’s Qinwen Zheng in straight sets to lift the title.
This comes after the 25-year-old failed to win her maiden US Open title last year as Sabalenka lost to Coco Gauff in the final. The Belarusian had also made it to the semifinals of the 2023 French Open and 2023 Wimbledon but the quest for a second Grand Slam title remained unfulfilled.
This inconsistency raised questions about Sabalenka’s ability to win multiple slams. However, after this title-winning performance in Melbourne, the 25-year-old Belarusian has shut out her critics. Not only that, but Sabalenka also made it loud and clear that she is here to win multiple titles and not disappear after bagging one.
Yeah, actually it's been in my mind that I didn't want to be that player who won it and then disappeared. I just wanted to show that I'm able to be consistently there and I'm able to win another one. I really hope that more, more than two right now, but for me was really important.Aryna Sabalenka said at the post-match press conference.
Aryna Sabalenka talks about the need to be disciplined
Aryna Sabalenka also talked about the need to be consistent and disciplined. The Belarusian said that she works day in and out with her team so that she is ready to show up at every contest with the same intensity. Sabalenka talked about the need for discipline if she is to win multiple Grand Slam titles.
That's why, no matter what the result, like, win or lose, we are always working hard, we always looking for things to improve in my game. Yeah, it's all about the process and make sure that, about the discipline, make sure that you're always there, you always show up, and you always work hard.Sabalenka said.
Aryna Sabalenka has started the 2024 season on a high. While she made it to the finals at the Brisbane International, the Belarusian has now successfully defended her crown in Melbourne, and that too with such dominance.
Sabalenka did not drop a set en route to her title win at the 2024 Australian Open. She started her campaign with a big win against Ella Seidel where she lost just one game. Sabalenka continued her dominance in the next rounds as she thrashed Brenda Fruhvirtova and Lesia Tsurenko in the second and third rounds respectively.
In the pre-quarterfinals, Sabalenka met Amanda Anisimova who upset Paula Badosa before this match. But this had little effect on Sabalenka who beat her opponent in straight sets of 6-3, 6-2.
In the quarterfinal, Sabalenka eased past Barbora Krejcikova and then avenged her US Open Final defeat against Coco Gauff in the semis. The final was another cakewalk of a game for the Belarusian as she won it 6-3, 6-2.
