The defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka, advances to the fourth round of the Australian Open. After a dominant win over Lesia Tsurenko with 6-0, 6-0, the World No. 2 ensured that her unbeaten run in Melbourne Park continues.
With this win, the Belarusian marked her 10 consecutive wins, a feat only achieved by her since Serena Williams in 2017–2019. Besides, this is also the first-ever double bagel in the Australian Open since Ash Barty‘s win in 2021.
The WTA World No. 2 converted six of her 10 break points. She finished the match with 16 winners to Tsurenko’s seven. Sabalenka also had six fewer unforced errors than the Ukrainian.
However, after the dominant win against the 28th-seeded Lesia Tsurenko, the defending champion opened up about her 2024 goals.
Last year Iga won so many sets 6-0. This year, one of the goals is to get closer to her.Sabalenka said in the post-match conference
The rivalry between Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka reached its peak last year. This was the time when both talented young players were up against each other for the No. 1 ranking.
However, as seen from Sabalenka’s perspective about Swiatek, both of them have immense respect for each other.
The defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka moves ahead in the Australian Open
So far in the tournament, there’s no stopping the defending champion. With three comprehensive wins, Sabalenka marches towards the trophy.
However, her arch-rival, Iga Swiatek, has also been in the form of her life. Moreover, the Polish player always had the upper hand over Sabalenka in past matches.
With that being said, it seems like World No. 1 is not messing up at the start of the season. She reached the third round of the tournament after a hard-fought win against Danielle Collins. She came back superbly from being 1-4 down to win the set and the match.
The World No. 1 will face Linda Noskova in the third round of the tournament on Saturday. While the defending champion will face Amanda Anisimova, who is coming after defeating Paula Badosa in the third round.
