Aryna Sabalenka suffered a tragic defeat against Coco Gauff in the US Open final tonight. Despite coming so close to the second Grand Slam title of her career, she was unable to calm herself down in the pressure situation and lost to the 19-year-old despite winning the first set. Sabalenka made a number of unforced errors throughout the match, which showed clearly that she was under pressure. The crowd reception that she got throughout the match could be one of the reasons for being so tensed as the US Crowd was constantly booing her. 

After the match was over, however, she broke down in tears, and thus the crowd was cheering for her during her on-court interview. At that time, the Belarusian did not shy away from cracking a joke. She said, “You guys could’ve supported like this during the match.”

The World No. 2 could not hold her tears while talking about her family in the on-court interview. “I just want to send a lot of love to my family. They have been awake and watching. Sorry for this result,” she said while tearing up. However, she was quick to put herself back together and immediately cracked a joke about potentially firing her entire team after this loss.

This is the second back-to-back Grand Slam heartbreak for Aryna Sabalenka. Earlier, she lost to Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon Open semifinal, missing out on the trophy by a whisker. Now, she has lost the US Open in a similar fashion.

Coco Gauff praises Aryna Sabalenka after winning the US Open

Coco Gauff performed phenomenally in the final against Aryna Sabalenka and ended up lifting the first Grand Slam of her career. Despite being a set down, the youngster did not give up and showed enormous willpower to defeat Sabalenka, who will be World No. 1 next week. 

However, after the match, she had only respect and praise for her opponent. “I knew if I didn’t give it my all, I had no shot at winning. Aryna is an incredible player. Congratulations on #1 ranking. It’s well deserved. I always tell my team you’re a really nice person,” she said about the Belarusian. 

At the age of 19, Gauff delivered a remarkable performance on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, securing a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory in a thrilling match lasting 2 hours and 6 minutes. This win marked a significant turnaround in her season’s fortunes, resembling a fairy tale story.
