Aryna Sabalenka is all set to become World No.1 after the completion of the US Open 2023. On being asked about her number 1 position in the on court interview after her quarter finals clash against Qinwen Zheng, Sabalenka commented, “Of course I’m happy and, as I said in the previous on-court interview, it’s incredible for me and my family.”
Sabalenka also added that she still has a few things to do in New York, sighting about winning the Championship. She also mentioned that although she and her family are super excited for her World No.1 status, she would only start thinking about it after the end of the US Open, hinting that she has other important stuff to take care of at the moment.
“It’s really important for me and my family. I have some things to do in New York this year, so I’m trying to focus on my game. I’ll think about becoming World No. 1 after the US Open,” Sabalenka said post her quarterfinal win.
The Belarusian rose up to the top rank of the WTA after current World No.1, Iga Swiatek lost in an astonishing upset against Jelena Ostapenko for the fourth time in a row and lost the chance to defend the title this year. With this, Sabalenka will move a spot ahead right after the tournament ends. This will also be the first time she will be World No.1 in her career.
Aryna Sabalenka gears up for her 3rd Major semi finals this season
“Reaching the WTA World No.1 singles ranking is something I have dreamed of ever since I was a little girl when I started playing tennis,” said Sabalenka in an earlier interview. Sabalenka defeated Chinese Qinwen Zheng in straight sets, 6-1,6-4 to secure a spot in the semifinals of the US Open, which is also her third Major semi-final this season.
The 2023 Australian Open Champion will look to extend her Grand Slam Tally at the Flushing Meadows. She has not dropped a single set in the tournament so far reaching the semi-finals, which is an absolutely incredible feat.
Sabalenka will face the winner of Madison Keys in the round of 4 tomorrow to secure a seat in the Championship round. She has stayed focused since the beginning and looks dominant as ever.
