It’s yet another year of massive Wimbledon matches and this year’s Women’s singles semi-final lived up to its expectations. Fan favorite and World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka who everyone was expecting to lift the title this coming Saturday has bottled it yet again at the big stage, this time against Ons Jabeur. Fans witnessed both players go through an intensive 3 hours of end-to-end tennis.
Sabalenka was leading the second set 4-2 against Ons Jabeur after winning the first set after a nail-biting tie-breaking went on to lose the match by 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. This marked Sabalenka’s second consecutive Grand Slam semi-final loss with her being bashed and trolled hard by her fans on social media for her shocking “choke”. Last month at the Roland Garros, she committed the same mistake against Karolína Muchová losing in the semi-final and today when things were looking so easy for her, she ended up on the losing side.
Take nothing away from Ons Jabeur who has battled her way in this year’s competition having faced one of the toughest draws playing the likes of Petra Kvitová, Elena Rybakina, and now Sabalenka, who are all intensive players on the grass. After losing the second set in such a fashion, Sabalenka was nowhere to be seen in the third set, committing faults and failing to get her head in the right place.
How Aryna Sabalenka has always let herself down in crucial moments?
This year Aryna Sabalenka has been one of the toughest opponents to face grabbing three titles already, with one of them being the Australian Open. But she could have had many more titles to her name had it not been for her loss of confidence and focus in the crucial moments, having always faltered when it mattered the most. She lost the chance to win her first Grand Slam title on clay, losing to Muchova in the semi-finals even after having the game under her control.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
With this becoming a natural instinct of the Belarussian to stumble in the moments where she needs to stand tall and strong, her fans are losing confidence in her. Several of her fans have also given their statements on the US Open, which is set to happen later this year saying she is going to have a good tournament just to bottle it all in the semis yet again.
