Belarusian World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka said that she is not bothered by missing the golden chance to become World No.1 after losing to Tunisian World No.6 Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon semi-finals. The Belarusian only needed to reach the finals to become the number one ranked player in the world due to the Polish star and current World No.1 Iga Swiatek‘s loss in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon against Elina Svitolina.

In the post-match press conference after the semi-finals, Sabalenka said, “I wouldn’t say that I was thinking about that (World No.1 ranking). I mean, for me it’s more about how you finish the year than during the year you’re first, second, you just go back and forth.”

Sabalenka continued holding her head high, “For me it’s more about finish the year. I’ll keep pushing myself and do everything I can to finish this year as World No.1. The tennis world is looking forward to seeing the battle for the World No. 1 ranking in the coming months of WTA, which is a rare sight since the Polish star was miles ahead of the ranking until the past few months.

The Belarusian World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka has reached her second Wimbledon semi-final of her career. Her first loss was in 2021. Like this year against Ons Jabeur, Sabalenka lost the battle in the last four in three sets. To make it more interesting, Sabalenka had won the first set in the 2021 Semi-finals as well. Her loss was against Karolina Pliskova in 2021.

This year, Sabalenka was having almost equal chances as Ons Jabeur. She was even up 4-2 in the second set and was looking to win the battle in straight sets. But the Tunisian World No.6 overturned the match and gave sweet revenge for her loss against the same Sabalenka in last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Sabalenka will try her level best in the coming months as she promised to become the World’s number one player in the coming months. If she can pull off some stunning performances in the coming hard court swing, the crown will definitely be hers.
