Belarusian tennis ace Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her crown at the 2024 Australian Open as she beat China’s Qinwen Zheng in the final on Saturday.
Sabalenka was over the moon after winning her second Grand Slam title and looked in a jolly mood during her post-match press conference. However, the 25-year-old also talked about missing her family while competing on the tour.
When Sabalenka was asked if she misses her family being that far away from them, the Belarusian agreed. The newly-crowned 2024 Australian Open champion said that while she does not talk much about their family in her speeches, she misses them a lot. Sabalenka also joked about her mother being angry.
Yes, I really miss them a lot. Of course, we are in touch, on the phone, but the phone is different than in real life. Yeah, of course, I spoke to my mom and there is already a fight about where the trophy is going. She's really pissed right now, by the way (smiling).Aryna Sabalenka said during her post-match press conference.
I'm actually never really speak about them on the winning speeches or -- doesn't matter -- on the speeches. But I just wanted to make sure that they know how much they mean to me and that they are my biggest motivation and I'm doing everything for them.Sabalenka added.
Aryna Sabalenka is not someone to disappear after one Grand Slam title
Aryna Sabalenka won her maiden Grand Slam title last year when she defeated Elena Rybakina in the 2023 Australian Open Final.
The Belarusian, however, failed to add another major title to her tally as she ended up as the runner-up at the 2023 US Open. But that did not mean she would give up.
Sabalenka promised to bag another Grand Slam title soon and she did here in Melbourne. After the win, she talked about the importance of this title. Sabalenka said that it was really important for her to win this tournament because she wanted to prove that she was not someone who would disappear after one title.
I just wanted to show that I'm able to be consistently there and I'm able to win another one. I really hope more, more than two, but for me, it was really important. The Belarusian ace said after the win.
It is worth mentioning that Sabalenka came close to winning her second major title at the US Open but she perished to Coco Gauff. The Belarusian had also reached the semifinals at the French Open and the Wimbledon last year, but a title eluded her.
Nevertheless, the 25-year-old managed to defend her crown, and that too without dropping a set. Sabalenka played 14 sets and she won all of them. The closest she came to losing a set was in the semifinal, against Gauff when Sabalenka was trailing in both sets. But she came back strong and won the match emphatically.
