The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has recently opened up to a bidding war, as they are set to welcome a 10th Masters tournament in the season.
Previously, it was Saudi Arabia that had laid a bid to host the master’s tournament, but now the ATP has organized a bid for other countries to try to host a new tournament.
Just ahead of the Indian wells, the Saudi had pretty much confirmed the new Master’s tournament, having bid for a whopping $1.3 Billion dollars. Currently, the Telegraph has revealed that the ATP has decided to open up the bidding, and other oil-rich countries are expected to try their hand in the auction.
With the bidding war now open, Saudi’s initial offer is expected to be withdrawn so that they can monitor the offers on the table from elsewhere before tabling a fresh bid of their own,Stated ATP via Telegraph.
Tennis Australia has also been offered to host the event, but this seems rather unlikely, with many tournaments already present in Australia. However, other countries like Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and more are expected to outbid Saudi Arabia for a chance to host an ATP 1000 tournament in their country.
This decision to host a new Master’s tournament has gotten closer than ever. Although nothing has been mentioned in the 2025 schedule released by the ATP, they are soon expected to push the schedule to include another ATP 1000 tournament.
ATP believes that they are acting in the best interest of the industry by including a tenth Masters tournament in the mix
The ATP has spoken to the public about their decision to include a new ATP 1000 tournament amid the tight schedule. This will be the tenth Masters tournament which is currently open for bidding by other countries.
Saudi Arabia already has a bid, and the ATP has now opened it to other countries as well. The ATP has also backed their decision, stating that it was taken in the best interest of the industry.
We have consistently called for more collaboration in tennis, advocating for a shared governance structure, with fair representation for the players, and a centralized commercial strategy across tennis,Stated ATP via Telegraph.
There have been speculations that the new Master’s tournament will take place just before the Australian Open, but it might come in the way of the United Cup and the subsequent tournaments leading to the first Grand Slam of the year.
That is one main reason why Australia might not pick this Masters tournament, to ensure that their other tournaments are not impacted by this. As the table is open, it is soon to be known if any country will come into play with a chance to host the new tournament.
