Andrey Rublev has made his place in the third round of the 2022 US Open after defeating Kwon Soon-woo of South Korea in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 6-4. He had a great run at the Citi Open making his place into the semi-finals but lost to Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets. He had a devasting loss at the Canadian Open followed by the elimination in the Round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open against Taylor Fritz. He did not play at the 2022 Wimbledon due to the ban on the players of Russia and Belarus owing to the Russia-Ukraine war.
He has already reached three finals on the ATP tour and has won titles at the three final appearances – Open 13 in Marseille, Dubai Tennis Championship, and the Serbia Open where he defeated the favorite local boy Novak Djokovic to clinch his tenth ATP title. He became the third player to sweep both the singles and doubles titles in the tournament’s 30-year history at the Open 13 ATP event.
“Still want to know how that works,” Andrey Rublev unhappy with the difference in behavior shown towards Russian people at various public events
Andrey Rublev is a great fan of the famous English songwriter and singer Harry Styles and had even gone to watch two concerts by the singer at Madison Square Garden in New York before the US Open started. During an interview, upon being asked if he was able to meet Harry Styles, Rublev hilariously spoke about the incident that pointed out the discrimination he had to face in the outer world for being a Russian citizen. He also recalled a similar incident when he had gone to watch a basketball match in Miami and was allocated a place at the very last rows which were something totally unexpected.
He was totally disappointed with the failed chance to meet the singer whereas players like Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini, and some more were present in the front rows clicking pictures. He said “No, they don’t do that stuff for me. I don’t know how all the players manage to meet all these stars. You won’t believe me but I once asked to go to an NBA game in Miami and they gave me the last, very last row upstairs. And I think I was already in the top 10 at the time. And then I see all the players, Zverev, Sonego, Berrettini, Ruud, all in the front row, taking pictures with all the stars and I’m like, ‘How does it work?“
