Ruud defeated Japanese pro Yosuke Watanuki 7-6(6),6-3 to confirm his spot in the second round of the tournament and improve his year-to-date win/loss record to 36/20. The Norwegian has struggled to find form this season as he suffered second-round exits in all Grand Slam events except the French Open.

Ruud made his second consecutive final appearance at the Roland Garros where he suffered a straight sets defeat at the hands of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. The 24-year-old arrives in the tournament on the back of a round of 16 exit at the Shanghai Masters where he was defeated by Hungarian pro Fabian Marozsan in 3 sets.

Marcos Giron arrives in the clash after an impressive comeback win against Yoshihito Nishioka. The 30-year-old defeated the Japanese pro 7-6(14),4-6,6-1 to get his 22nd win of the season. The American was impressive on his serve as he hit 13 aces, winning 79% of points on his 1st serve.

The pair have faced off once before, at the Paris Masters in 2021. The Norwegian breezed past the American in straight sets to book a spot in the quarter-finals.

Even though Casper Ruud has struggled to find his best form this season, the Norwegian would fancy his chances against the 79th-ranked American as he looks forward to confirming his spot in the ATP Finals to be played in Turin, Italy.
