Novak Djokovic vs Andy Murray: Preview
Novak Djokovic has had a pretty dramatic season so far. The World No.1 has denied entry into Australia after a week-long tussle with the Australian government and hence wasn’t able to defend his Australian Open title. The same thing repeated in the Goden Swing as he was not allowed to enter the USA due to his vaccination status. He started his season in Dubai where he lost in the quarterfinals and then lost his first match in Monte Carlo. He then followed it up with a runner-up finish at the Serbia Open. This week in Madrid, he eased past Gael Monfils in the second round in straight sets 6-3,6-2.
Andy Murray started his season on a high with a runner-up finish at the Sydney International. But ever since that, his season has been pretty sloppy by his set standards. He was finding it difficult to clear the initial rounds and lost consecutive second-round matches at the Australian Open, ATP Rotterdam, Qatar Open, Dubai Tennis Championships, Indian Wells Masters, and the Miami Masters. He then decided to skip the clay season but a late change in thought landed him at Madrid courtesy of a wild card. This week, he defeated Dominic Thiem in the first round and then stunned 14th seed Denis Shapovalov in the second round in three sets 6-1,3-6,6-2 to book a date with Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic vs Andy Murray: Head-to-Head
This will be the 38th meeting between the duo. Djokovic leads the H2H 25-11. They last met at Doha in 2017 where Djokovic won in three sets.
Novak Djokovic vs Andy Murray: Prediction
If it was five years ago, this match could easily be one of the best of the tournament. But things have drastically changed in the last 5 years, especially for Murray. He is not the same and is playing tennis with a metal hip. Djokovic, on the other hand, hasn’t had much game time and desperately needs to play as many matches as possible before the French Open. The Serb will be the obvious favorite to win the match but Murray’s fighting spirit is one of the best in the sport’s history. Expect some good exchanges with Djokovic easing into the quarterfinals.
Prediction: Djokovic to win in straight sets.
