Alexander Zverev hasn’t had the best start to the 2022 season. He bowed out of the fourth round of the Australian Open before bouncing back to reach the final at Marseille. He was then kicked out of the Mexican Open for inappropriate actions before having a poor Golden Swing where he lost his first match at Indian Wells and was knocked out of the quarterfinals at Miami. He started his clay season on a positive note at Monte-Carlo where he made it to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
18-year-old Holger Rune has been on a constant rise since the last year and has had a mixed season so far. He started the season on a very poor note where he lost the opening round matches at the Australian Open, Cordoba Open, and Argentina Open before finally winning a match at ATP Marseille. He then made it to the main draw at Indian Wells and followed it up by winning the Sanremo Challenger. At the Monte-Carlo Masters, he reached the second round and repeated the same at the Serbia Open. This week at Munich, he defeated Jiri Lehecka in the first round in straight sets 7-6(4),6-3.
