If Nick Kyrgios doesn’t come out of his knee injury, then his career will be over, believes compatriot and former tennis player Mark Philippoussis. Kyrgios was expected to return to the ongoing Wimbledon Championships but he pulled out of the tournament, as through an Instagram post, he announced he won’t be playing at the All England Club.
Philippoussis opined that even if Kyrgios comes back to playing, he is again going to have that knee niggle. He suggested his fellow Australian makes sure he recovers fully from the injury before making a comeback to tennis, or else, his career could be over.
“He’s not even close to being fit, and I knew straight away he was in trouble,” Philippoussis said as quoted as saying by The West Australian. “If he comes back too early, which we have seen, and if he’s not putting in the work physically on that knee to strengthen that joint, unfortunately, I’m not sure how much we’re going to see him.”
The 46-year-old cited his own example to emphasize that what he suggested to Kyrgios shouldn’t be taken lightly by the 28-year-old. As Philippoussis struggled a lot even after having six knee surgeries, he warned Kyrgios to not mess around with his injuries, saying Kyrgios needs to help himself if he wants to keep playing tennis.
Nick Kyrgios last played in Stuttgart Open
Nik Kyrgios missed this year’s Australian Open where he was set to play against Roman Safiullin in the first round. After recovering from the injury, he played at the Stuttgart Open in Germany last month but faced an upset with a scoreline of 5-7, 3-6 against Wu Yibing.
He was expected to play in the Halle Open against Lorenzo Sonego but the match got cancelled. The 28-year-old then pulled himself out of the Wimbledon as well where he would have played against David Goffin in the first round. He was forced to withdraw his name just a day before his first-round match due to torn ligament in his wrist.
Kyrgios reached the finals of last year’s Wimbledon but couldn’t emulate that run this year. It was the first time he reached a Grand Slam final but his hope of lifting the trophy was thrashed by World No.2 Novak Djokovic who won the final with the score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6.
