Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev: Match Preview
Alexander Zverev’s quest for his maiden Grand Slam title continues at the 2024 Australian Open. The German brought out his A-game during the quarterfinals against young gun Carlos Alcaraz. The sixth seed won the match 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 in over 3 hours and 5 minutes.
It was a complete domination by Zverev, with a sensational service game and disciplined shot-making. The win takes the German into his second semi-final at Melbourne Park, with his only appearance taking place back in 2020. He has now spent nearly 17 hours on the court for his five matches, surviving test after test.
Daniil Medvedev is through to his third semi-final at the Australian Open in the last four editions. On both previous occasions, he managed to make the finals but finished as the runner-up. The Russian overpowered a stern Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals, winning the match 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
The former World No. 1’s mind tricks helped him win despite the Pole having better numbers in each parameter. The Russian has spent just above 16 hours on the court owing to his marathon clashes as well, but he has managed the Melbourne heat well. With fewer altercations with fans, he rather showed only ‘love’ on the court.
This will be the 19th meeting between the two superstars. Medvedev currently leads the head-to-head 11-7. Surprisingly, this will however be the first time the two men meet in a Grand Slam match.
Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev: Prediction
Coming into the tie, Zverev is 9-1 for the season with a career hardcourt record of 182-88. His overall career record across all surfaces stands at 470-225. Medvedev is 5-0 in 2024 with a solid hardcourt record of 224-70. His overall career record is currently at 495-198.
The match is evenly poised between the two. With only one semi-final win from six appearances in Majors, the German will surely be desperate to reach the finals. As for the third seed, two losses in the finals would have only increased his hunger to get his hands on the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.
It would only be a surprise if the match does not go to five sets. Both men have fought and survived thrilling clashes and won’t back down from going the distance. But considering all factors for the sake of prediction, it just might be the Russian’s day in a close encounter.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in 5-sets.
