The security system at the Australian took a small hit as they failed to intervene when a masked lady interrupted play by throwing pamphlets. Alexander Zverev, who was playing, was rather disappointed with the security for not being there when it mattered the most. At the risk of sounding arrogant, the German criticized the Australian Open security.
Zverev was up against the last remaining Brit, Cameron Norrie, in the fourth round of the Australian Open. During the third set, both players were distracted as play had to be stopped courtesy of a masked lady. During the 6th game of the third set, a masked lady pulled out a bunch of “Free Palestine” pamphlets and threw them on the court.
What are you doing? You’re protecting players from players? That’s not really the whole point. Something like this happens and it takes three, four minutes for somebody to show up.Alexander Zverev at the AO
With the absence of security at that moment, the protester was escorted out of the court by a couple of supporters. This untimely absence of security was surprising for Zverev who usually runs into them at every corner. With tight security, Zverev expects them to be more present outside the court than on the players.
Alexander Zverev baffled by the inconsistent nature of the security at the AO
While criticizing the security at the AO Press, Zverev recounts his incident where he was stopped by them. Having forgotten his admit card in the locker room, Zverev was not allowed in the gym by the security.
Even today, I played obviously five sets, four hours, some minutes. I went to the locker room, and the gym area is right next to the locker room. They wouldn't let me into the gym because I forgot my credential in the locker room.Alexander Zverev at the AO
Nonetheless, after more than four hours of tiresome play, No.6 Zverev beat the Brit 7-5,3-6,6-3,4-6,7-6(3) to advance to the quarter-finals. Having made way to his 11th Grand Slam quarterfinals, Zverev is up against the fierce Carlos Alcaraz, who continues his dominant run at the Slam. Both the top seeds will battle it out for the spot in the last four as they promise an all-exciting match.
