World No. 111 Bianca Andreescu continues her run in the 2022 Madrid Open as she bashes 2022 Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins in straight-sets. Bianca needed just 69-minutes to defeat the American taking the match 6-1, 6-1 to register her first Top-10 win since she beat Serena Williams in the finals of the 2019 US Open.

Playing in Madrid, Bianca is just in her second tournament of the season after making her debut in the 2022 Stuttgart Open where she lost to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka in the second round. This win over Collins was Bianca’s second successive win over an American having earlier defeated Alison Riske in 3-sets in the first round which also saw the Canadian drop a bagel in the third set to claim the victory.

It was a disciplined performance by Andreescu as she hit 1 ace, made 2 double-faults, saved 5 out of the 6 breakpoints and converted 6 of the 10 breakpoint opportunities that were available for her. She finished the match with 64 points out of the 105 that were contested. Collins had a poor outing as she managed 1 ace, made 6 double-faults and could convert only 1 breakpoint from the 6 available breakpoints, finishing the match with 41 points.

The win over Collins brings Bianca her first Top-10 win and it has come at an important time as she is coming back after a long injury layoff. “I knew I had to put on a very good performance because she’s been doing very well recently; I did not expect for it to go like that at all. But I stuck to my game plan and it worked. What I did well today is, I stayed in the present moment and told myself it’s not over til it’s over, even at 6-1, 4-1,” said Bianca after the match.

She started hitting the ball harder and sometimes it would go in, sometimes it wouldn’t. But what she did was very smart because that in turn put pressure on me. If I didn’t hold my ground she probably would’ve gotten back into the match. It’s quite a big court, so it’s easy to step back. But I had that mentality of staying in the court. [In terms of patterns], when I’m looking for my forehand, I’m running around and being aggressive, putting pressure from the start with my return, with my serve.

“All the starting-the-point situations, like serve wide and make her run to the other side. It means a lot because I’ve been trying to find my way back. I’m so happy I was able to get back in that zone again. I found all the tics that helped me win when I was in the zone. Little things, like touching the line, hitting the shoes with the racquet, it helps a lot,” said Bianca after the match.
