The Russian and Belarusian players have been banned from Wimbledon, the oldest and one of the most prestigious tournaments in tennis due to Russia’s war crimes against Ukraine. This decision by AELTC was taken due as to avoid the situation of the royal family giving awards to the Russian or Belarusian athletes at the end of the Championships. They thought that this situation may helo Russia peddle its propaganda more.
The ATP and WTA tried to warn Wimbledon of the consequences, but since Wimbledon didn’t change its decision the tournament was stripped of its ranking points. With ranking points out of the picture, some of the athletes might consider dropping out of this year’s Wimbledon. Reilly Opelka, the American tennis player had called the winning Wimbledon 2022 an inferior achievement due to the lack of Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament.

Opelka’s tweet about the Wimbledon being an inferior achievement was based on a good reason. But the tweet was greeted with mixed reactions some of them highlighting that it’s important to stand against the war crimes of a country, while the others underlined that banning innocent sportsperson for an action over which they had no control is plain injustice.
This particular tweet from a user received special attention from Opelka, who said that there are other countries as well accused of war crimes and atrocities like China whose players are not banned from the tournament. Opelka’s reply has also received a lot of attention including support and backlashes on which other nations should be banned for warmongering.
