Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia has made history as she becomes the first player to win both the singles and doubles events at the WTA Elite Trophy. She was seeded eighth in singles and first in doubles, along with partner Veronika Kudermetova.
The twenty-seven-year-old has had quite the season this year. She made it to the semi-final of the French Open, where she was defeated by Iga Swiatek. That’s not all; she also made it to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open.
The tennis professional has been making consistent third and fourth round appearances at the tournaments. However, her greatest accomplishment was at the Madrid Open, where she won the title in the doubles category alongside partner Victoria Azarenka.
Her latest achievement is quite recent. She won the WTA Elite Trophy in both the singles and doubles categories. Interestingly, she is the first player to do so, truly creating a spot for herself in the tennis history books.
While she was the top seed in the doubles category, she made quite the move up in the singles matches. She defeated Madison Keys, Caroline Garcia, and Daria Kasatkina to make her way to the final. In the final, she was put up against home hero Qinwen Zheng. The Brazilian defeated Zheng in straight sets, where both sets ran to tiebreakers. It is safe to say that the match was quite a thriller.
In the doubles category, she defeated Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi in the final to claim her trophy. However, this match was a bit more straightforward compared to her singles win. She, along with Kudermetova, defeated the Japanese-Indonesian pair with a score of 6-3, 6-3. However, this is not her only achievement. With a career-high ranking of World No. 10, she is the only Brazilian to break into the top 10.
Following her triumph, the WTA Elite champion opened up about her win, thanking the crowd and her family. She said:
Zhuhai will be in a special place in my heart because it was my first singles title of the year. I was working very hard during the year. I gave everything on this court. I’ll keep this energy for next year
Beatriz Haddad Maia’s journey at the WTA Elite Trophy 2023
While the Brazilian sculpted history books with her strokes at the WTA Elite Trophy, she did not have the easiest path. With her singles and doubles campaign leading to success, she is on cloud nine.
Her doubles campaign saw her battle some of the toughest competitors on the tour. Partnering up with Russian Veronika Kudermetova, she made a display of a brilliant partnership at Zhuhai. The duo had defeated Qianhui Tang, and Oksana Kalashnikova in the group stage.
Following this success, they defeated Yana Sizikova and Oksana Kalashnikova. This led them to take part in the final, where they defeated Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi, claiming the trophy.
The former World No. 10’s singles campaign was equally grueling. She has to defeat Madison Keys and Caroline Garcia in the group stages to advance to the semi-final. There, she had defeated Daria Kasatkina to make it to the final. In the final, she defeated Qinwen Zheng to claim the prize. Ultimately, this was one of the more successful campaigns for the Brazilian.
