The decision by Wimbledon to ban the Russian and Belarusian players was a very big step that was bound to have a huge impact on the tennis world. The ATP and the WTA warned the LTA that this decision would come with consequences. Finally, with Wimbledon standing its ground to impose the ban, the ATP and the WTA decided to strip the Championships of the points.

Now, Since the Championships have lost the ranking points this year, it would cause a great upheaval in the rankings and turn the world’s oldest tennis tournament into an exhibition tournament. It might also cause a reduction in prize money for the tournament, and many players have already shown a lack of enthusiasm in competing at this year’s Wimbledon. Many players, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, had criticized this step taken by Wimbledon to impose the ban.

Since most of the players condemned this decision by Wimbledon, the WTA and ATP decided on removing the ranking points, which according to Djokovic, was a great firm stand against Wimbledon. Still, he also called it a “lose-lose situation”. Though many players have also said they were not consulted about the decision of the Tennis Associations to remove the ranking points altogether.

Though many high-ranked players like Denis Shapovalov have accepted that they had not been consulted about the decision by the tennis associations, they were not critical of other players who might’ve been consulted. British number 2, Daniel Evans, came forward with sharp criticism of favoritism towards the players like Nadal and Djokovic. He said:

“It’s not the right decision but it’s a difficult one, Obviously everyone’s got an opinion. I want to be playing for points, obviously, but there’s obviously bigger things to this decision than me wanting points.”

“I also don’t like it when the players are saying it’s a disgrace but don’t know the ins and outs of the issue. I would like to have more player input, but that wasn’t to be. Like most things, the bigger, better players were asked, and there’s quite a lot of other players on the tour as well as Rafa, Novak. So, which is disappointing, in my opinion, from the ATP.”

He continued pointing out that Harriet Dart was also not consulted about the decision:

”But being better at tennis makes your opinion louder, Does it make it right or wrong? Does it mean it’s any better of an opinion than mine or Harriet Dart’s? And that was, in my opinion, disappointing that we weren’t asked. And that, as a Brit as well, I think we should have been asked.”
