In a recent interview with the WTA Insider, Belinda Bencic clarified why she chose the Russian as her coach and what she is looking to gain from this partnership. She believes that he can bring a positive change in her mental attitude and her game.

“I strongly believe that he’s a very good coach and he can improve me, my game, and the mental part,” Belinda Bencic said.

Belinda Bencic has had a bleak season so far. She was defeated by Paula Badosa in the Sydney International tournament in the quarter-final round. Then, she crashed out of both the women’s singles and mixed doubles events at the Australian Open in the first and second rounds respectively. In the Qatar Open and Indian Wells Masters, she could not advance to the second round of the tournament. At Miami Open, she was defeated by Naomi Osaka in the semi-final match.

She struggled on the clay courts as she could not advance into the fourth round of both the Madrid Open and the French Open. She then picked up some form by making it to the final of the Grass Court Championships at Berlin but lost to eventual champion Ons Jabeur. At Wimbledon, she failed miserably by falling at the first hurdle. At US Open, the Tokyo Olympics 2020 gold medal winner lost to Karolína Plíšková in the third round. In the ongoing Guadalajara Open, she defeated Leylah Annie Fernandez to advance to the next round.

Thus, it is very important for Belinda Bencic to change a few things which can propel her to the top and give her fine head start to the upcoming WTA season. In 2023, everyone has high hopes from her and want her to do great.
