Ben Shelton credits John McEnroe for ‘unmatched’ off-court energy equivalent to his during the matches as Team World dominates day one of the Laver Cup 2023

The highly anticipated Laver Cup kicked off with a bang as Team World took a dominating charge on day 1. The youngster Ben Shelton stole the spotlight and beat Arthur Fils to grab a point for Team World. Ben Shelton set the Rogers Arena on fire as he won against Frenchman Arthur Fils. The final score was 7-6(4), 6-1, giving the Team World under John McEnroe a formidable lead in the tournament.

In the final interview after the match, the American credited his coach for the win and highlighted the significance of having McEnroe as a coach. “Yeah, it’s been amazing. Just a few key pieces of advice that I’ve picked up on over the last few days. It’s been great to be around him, and his energy is unmatched, you know.” said Ben Shelton in the post-match interview.

John McEnroe provides the team with his championship experience. “Having him as a captain in a team event is amazing. He definitely matches my energy out here on the court and I’m happy to be playing for him and Team World,” said Ben Shelton. The future looks bright for Shelton if he can learn plenty from McEnroe.

During the amazing first match of the most awaited Laver’s Cup, Ben Shelton thanked the fans for cheering him on to gain a point for his team. “Really happy to see a red stadium right now. Yeah, I think the crowd really got me going in Canada. I know it’s not the US but thanks for the World support,” said Ben Shelton, who couldn’t hide his excitement during the interview.

He has started the defending reign well by taking a good lead. Team Red have also won all their other matches for the night and have taken a dominating lead of 4-0. Players like Francisco Cerundolo, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and the duo of Tiafoe and Paul have put Team World on top. Ben Shelton now rests for the next game and is extremely happy to be cheering on his teammates in the day two games. Shelton wanted to set the tone for his team with his performance. It’s safe to say that it worked out so well.
