World No.19 Ben Shelton was teased by compatriots Christopher Eubanks and Tommy Paul. The Americans had poked fun at Shelton, threatening to recreate the controversial ‘phone call’ celebration. The phone call celebrations were a series of celebratory actions, first started by Ben Shelton himself

Ben Shelton was creating waves at the 2023 US Open. Not only did he make a remarkable semi-final appearance at the American Grand Slam, but he also grabbed attention with his unusual celebration after winning the quarter-finals against Frances Tiafoe. However, the 20-year-old faced criticism for seeming arrogant after his victory.

This simple incident was aggravated even further when the scales turned and Novak Djokovic gave Shelton a taste of his own medicine. When Novak won the semi-final against the American youngster, he made the same phone call signal to celebrate against Shelton. This on-court banter between the two players seemed to set off a series of events in other tournaments. This celebration was also copied by Lorenzo Musetti, after victory at the Davis Cup.

The three Americans were asked if the ‘phone call’ would happen once again. Eubanks responded, “For sure. The first 140 that comes up, I’m jumping up like this.” Shelton has revealed that he was planning to bring out his phone once again at the Laver Cup if they win a match.

“Coming into the US Open it was like, ‘OK, I really have something to prove’. I wanted to show people that maybe I deserved to be on the team or the people who said that I didn’t, kind of prove them wrong,” said Shelton. However, he said that he was quite pleased with his performance at the US Open championship, where he made a semi-final appearance. However, he lost in the semi-final to Novak Djokovic, who later won the title.

Shelton also added that he was quite excited to play at the Laver Cup. Team World will be headed by John McEnroe. The team consists of Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, and Francisco Cerundolo.
