The match was always going to be a difficult battle for him, and not just because Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest players of all time and routinely devours young players. He is also the game’s top returner. Djokovic could always get his racquet on Shelton’s serves, no matter how fast or skillfully they were put. It appeared to be a routine victory for the guy who would eventually coast to his 24th US Open triumph, the most Slams won by any player in history.

Shelton recalled thinking during the match “Okay, I may not win this match,” He then proceeded to state “But I want this guy to know—I want the crowd to know—that I’m here to play. And that I’m going to be back.”
