World No. 112 Benoit Paire has been one of the most talked about players in recent times. The Frenchman is not in discussions because of his talents but rather due to his actions on and off the court.
He is constantly in conversations in tennis circles for having not utilized his talent. A loss in desire followed by fitness struggles and controversies has seen the 34-year-old exit the Top-100. He is now mostly seen on the Challenger circuit with rare ATP Tour appearances.
Paire was recently back in discussions after his thumping win over former World No. 1 Andy Murray. The two Tour veterans squared off in the first round of the 2024 Open Sud de France in Montpellier. Paire won the tie 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 to register his first win on the ATP Tour in over 18 months.
The defeat for Murray meant he is winless in 2024 so far. The Briton’s retirement was called on by BBC Scotland but Andy shut them down with a stern reply. But for Paire, the limelight remained on his partying and other habits instead of his comeback win against the 3-time Grand Slam title winner.
It's difficult. I was 18th in the world, I played in big tournaments. And I end up only playing Challengers for a year. And against guys who play well. And I continually hear these criticisms that I only drink alcohol and that there's no point in me playing tennis. On a daily basis, it's difficult. But I find that I made a lot of effort and I am rewarded for it.said Paire speaking with L’Equipe.
Benoit Paire opens up on the fuel that keeps him active on Tour
The discussion around the off-court habits of players certainly disturbs them. No one likes to see their results and performances being ignored for something that’s a part of their private lives. Paire had similar comments when asked about his desire to continue playing at the age of 34.
The big Frenchman candidly opened up on having passion for the sport still alive within him. Despite currently playing on Challengers, he has not given up on the dream to return to the big courts and showcase his talent. He also admitted that if he remains physically fit, he can achieve good results.
I don't want to end up in inferior tournaments and have regrets. I have been aware for a long time that I can beat good players. Even last year, I told myself that with this quality of tennis while being on the main circuit, I would have beaten good guys. This victory proves to me that when the head and physique are there, I am still capable of making big shots.continued Paire.
OK, Murray may be at the end of his career, but he's still a tough player to beat. I had a great performance. I like playing this type of opponent. And on a big court, I am capable of doing great things. But to play on a big court, you have to go through the Challenger again and it wasn't easy. »concluded the Frenchman.
Following the win over Murray, the former World No. 18 will now go up against countryman Harold Mayot. It will be the first meeting between the two Frenchmen.
