‘Better than Emma Raducanu!’ Twitter hails Leylah Fernandez after she defeats Amanda Anisimova to reach her maiden French Open quarterfinal

Leylah Fernandez, the 19-year-old from Canada faced Amanda Anisimova in the fourth round of the French Open 2022. It was an exciting clash between two very talented young players. Though Anisimova had performed better than Leylah in all of the clay-court events preceding the Roland-Garros, the Canadian got the better of Anisimova. Leylah beat Anisimova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to enter the quarterfinals for the first time in Paris. After this win against Anisimova, Fernandez improved her head-to-head record to 2-0 against the American.

Both the players showed great temperament in adjusting to the conditions and responding well. They have shown some great tennis to reach the fourth round of Roland Garros. But, Anisimova’s biggest weakness throughout the match was her break point coversion. She only converted 4 out of 12 breakpoints. If she had been able to convert some more of those, the result might have been different.

Leylah Fernandez has a chance to make it two of last three Grand Slam semifinals.

Fernandez will face Martina Trevisan in the quarterfinals. Trevisan, currently ranked number 59 in the world had a phenomenal week in Paris. She got past Daria Saville and also defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich. All of her victories were in straight sets. Though Fernandez is a favorite to reach the semifinal, she will have a tough task in facing a spirited Trevisan.

Fernandez would hope to emulate her success at the US Open 2021 and reach the final of the French Open 2022. She will be extremely motivated for the same. Her performance in the French Open has been great in contrast to Emma Raducanu the qualifier who defeated Fernandez in the US open final. Fans have stated that she was always a better player than Raducanu, she was just unlucky in the final of the Grand Slam.

Fernandez will play her quarterfinal match to try to make it to her 2nd semifinals of the last three majors.
