Bianca Andreescu, who won the title of the US Open way back in 2019, was forced to withdraw from the prestigious Slam this year. The Canadian was due to face Lesia Tsurenko in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday.
Andreescu has not played many tournaments this season. The 23-year-old had missed the Grand Slam last year as well due to a back injury when she drew against Venus Williams.
This year again, the former Slam Champ has pulled out of several matches. The organizers revealed on Saturday that Andreescu would not be playing the opening match. She had suffered a small stress fracture in her back during her match at the Canadian Open. Bianca will be replaced by a qualifier now.
The 23-year-old lost her opening matches in both the Citi Open in Washington DC and the subsequent match at the Canadian Open this year. She skipped the Cincinnati Open as well, citing her back pain as the reason.

Is Bianca Andreescu going to quit tennis?
Post her injury hiatus back in 2019, Bianca Andreescu revealed that she had been planning to quit the sport. Since her sensational win in the Finals of the US Open against 23 singles Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams in 2019, Bianca Andreescu hasn’t achieved much.
With the advent of COVID-19 and persistent injury problems, Andreescu had to miss the entirety of 2020. She had also been fighting mental health issues and was away from the court for a long time.
“I’m being really honest here, but I actually wanted to quit the sport,” Andreescu had told a WTA Insider back in April last year. “It was really bad. I am privileged in a way for having this opportunity and doing all of this. Now I’m very grateful, more than ever,” she had revealed. With injuries taking a toll on her career yet again, many fans wonder if this season will mark the end of the Canadian’s career.
