Big upheaval in ATP rankings as Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev make big strides, Roger Federer plummet downs to worst drop in 20 years

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic together are referred to as the Big Three of tennis due to their utter dominance in the sport. They have always occupied one of the top two spots of the ATP ranking since 16 November 2003. But after the fall of Djokovic to the third place from the top spot this week, for the first time in nearly 20 years, the top three are not present in the first two places of the ATP ranking.

This new week has brought numerous changes in ranking including the return of Daniil Medvedev as world number 1. Alexander Zverev has hit the career-high ranking of number 2 in the world and is bound to stay there for a while even as he is injured from a freak incident on-court during his semifinal clash with Rafa. Casper Ruud, the runner-up of the French Open 2022, has also occupied the new career-high rank of number 5. Rafael Nadal is still world number 4, after winning both Grand Slams held till now in 2022 and some other very good performances.

Roger Federer falls down even further in the new ATP rankings.

Roger Federer has not played a match on the tour since his Wimbledon 2021 quarterfinal, and after the knee surgery, he is still to make a comeback on the tour. He has dropped out of the top-50 for the first time since June 2000. Andy Murray, the two-time Wimbledon Champion and a part of a Big Four, a slight extension of the Big Three, has made his return to the top 50.

It’s the former World No. 1’s first time in the Top 50 since he returned to the tour in June 2018 after the first of his two hip surgeries. He had reached the finals of the Stuttgart Open 2022, his first event on the grass after demolishing Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, and earning his first win over an ATP top 5 since 2016. Many other changes in the rankings including the return of Hubert Hurkacz to the top 10 and the fall of the Wimbledon 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini from the top 10. Berrettini fell to number 13 even after winning the Stuttgart Open, his first tournament after a comeback from a wrist injury.
