Bjorn Borg, the former World No. 1 from Sweden, will be in Chennai on Monday. The 11-time Grand Slam champion is coming to accompany his son Leo, who will be participating in the ATP Challenger event hosted by the city. Leo is already in the city, warming up for the challenge ahead. 

Borg’s attendance in the tournament will definitely be a big thing for the Challenger event. The 66-year-old was the first man in the Open Era to win 11 Grand Slam singles titles with six at the French Open and five consecutively at Wimbledon. Borg unexpectedly retired from tennis in 1981, at the age of 25.

The 19-year-old Leo Borg is participating in the Indian leg of Challengers in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Pune. He won his first professional title at the ITF tour stop in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt last year making giant a leap in the rankings moving up over 1500 spots and ending the year at world no. 506. In Chennai, he received a wildcard and will be hoping to repeat the success of his last season. He recorded his first junior Grand Slam win in the 2021 French Open.

Chennai will host the ATP Challenger event between Feb 12 to 19 

SDAT Stadium in Chennai

The hard court event, Chennai Open Challenger is set to take place in SDAT Tennis stadium in Chennai. The tournament is currently part of the ATP Challenger Tour held annually in the city since 2018. This year players from 14 countries are participating thus making the competition interesting.

21-year-old Tsen Cheun Hsin from Taipei, ranked 115th in the world, will be the top seed in the tournament. Hsin is followed by Peniston Ryan of Great Britain (ranked 149), James Duckworth of Australia (ranked 156), and three-time ATP Challenger winner Luca Nardi of Italy (ranked 162). Leo Borg is one of the wild-card entrants in the tournament. 

As far as Indian participation is concerned, Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Mukund Sasikumar are in the qualifying draw. The event has total prize money of  USD 130000 with the winner adding 100 points to the ATP rankings. The Chennai tournament is the first of a series of ATP Challenger 100 events to be held in India. The next ones will be held in Bengaluru and Pune.
