The sixth edition of the Laver Cup will take place from September 22 to September 24 in Vancouver, Canada. It’s been 12 months since Team Europe’s unbeatable streak came to an end when Team World defeated them. Bjorn Borg, who is the captain of Team Europe, wishes to avenge his team’s loss. Retired veteran Roger Federer would also be present for his celebration of the one-year anniversary of his last competitive match. His advice would prove very significant for Team Europe.
Federer played his final professional match at the Laver Cup 2022 alongside his rival and good friend Rafael Nadal in a clash with Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. Despite a close match, they unfortunately lost with a scoreline of 6-4, 6(2)-7, and 9-11.
Out of the five existing editions, Team Europe has won four of the tournaments. They only lost last year, ending their winning streak. They are thirty to reclaim their position as victors. Borg said that it was a disappointment that they lost last year in London, but nevertheless, all six players are desperate to win the trophy back and bring it to Europe.
He even stated that this time they have the backing of the Swiss Maestro with them. He will be on standby to provide the necessary advice. Borg said, “It’s going to be very competitive, prestigious — no one likes to lose.” The Swedish legend also added, “We are ready to beat these guys.”
Roger Federer on Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray missing this year’s Laver Cup
Last year, Roger Federer allied with his strongest rivals, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray. However, this year, none of them will be playing. With them out of the picture, Team Europe’s lineup appears to be weak.
Nadal has been sitting out on the sidelines for the whole season after the Australian Open due to his injuries. Djokovic is taking a short hiatus after his exhausting run this year. The Serb has been playing constantly as he participated in the Davis Cup simultaneously after winning his historic 24th title at the US Open. Murray has instead opted to participate in the Zhuhai Championships as the ATP tour returns to China after 5 years.
Federer, who will be present at the event to commemorate his retirement, spoke about his contemporaries missing out on the action. He said that he understood how rigorous schedules can be, and he himself was very strict about which tournament to play. The 42-year-old still believes that the greatest players are still here and that it’s going to be a great weekend.
He said, “Rafa being injured, Novak taking a break, I understood that, obviously, completely. Murray maybe not coming back again, it’s understandable. Look it is what it is, I still think it’s going to be a great weekend.”
