‘Boom! It nearly killed him,’ Alex Corretja couldn’t control his excitement watching Carlos Alcaraz play ‘inspiring’ tennis
Carlos Alcaraz
19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, who was termed as one of the pre-tournament favorites to win the 2022 French Open, has lived up to the hype so far. He is through to the quarterfinals of the tournament and except for his second round encounter against Albert Ramos Vinolas, things have been pretty smooth for the Spaniard.
He hasn’t dropped a set in his last two matches against formidable opponents and has looked very strong on the court. He defeated Karen Khachanov in the Round of 16 in straight sets 6-1,6-4,6-4 to book a date with Alexander Zverev. Alcaraz dominated Khachanov and had answers to every question the Russian posted.
The Spaniard was hitting the ball very hard and pulled off some jaw-dropping shots which left everyone in awe. Eurosport analyst Alex Corretja too was shocked to see the level of tennis Alcaraz was playing. He expressed his excitement and said that it is just the beginning for the 19-year-old.
He pointed out that Alcaraz is enjoying his tennis and that is the main reason for his success. He said that Alcaraz loves spending time on the court and mentioned an instance where Khachanov threw bullet forehands at him and all Alcaraz needed was one big strike to silence the Russian.
“This is just the beginning. I mean, he is just going for it all the time and I also feel that he knows he’s enjoying it and feels like the crowd is behind him. At the end of the match, Khachanov is hitting as hard as he could- one, two, three, four, and all of a sudden Carlitos come like boom! It nearly killed him,” Corretja said.
‘You’re not in Euro Disney, you are at Roland Garros’: Corretja on seeing Carlos Alcaraz’s game
Corretja said that he felt Carlos was enjoying his game so much that he thought that the match should probably go to the fourth set so that he could play more. He jokingly said that his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero must be thinking why isn’t he closing out the match sooner- It’s the French Open, not Euro Disney!
“I think Carlitos was thinking why shouldn’t I go to the fourth set because I’m fun. Why should I stop! I looked that Ferrero and he’s like ‘You’re not in Euro Disney, you are at Roland Garros and you need to finish this match” he said.
