In a recent podcast episode, tennis legend Boris Becker officially revealed that he will be coaching 20-year-old Holger Rune. The German, who is no stranger to winning Grand Slams himself, is focused on helping the youngster through the drought phase and making him one of the best in the game.
A former World No. 4, Rune has not been playing very well in his last few tournaments. Following his quarter-final finish at Wimbledon, the Danish top seed has been consistently making early exits. Rune crashed out in the first round of all but one tournament at the China Open, where he ousted Felix Auger-Aliassime but lost to Grigor Dimitrov.
Boris Beker, in an appearance on Eurosport Germany’s Das Gelbe vom Ball podcast, revealed that Rune had asked the former World No. 1 to prepare him. The 6-time Grand Slam champion revealed that he visited Rune in Monte-Carlo during a training week. He also had a chat with World No. 6’s mother there. “The most important person in the team is Mother Aneke; without her, nothing works,” Beker stated.
“I’m on the phone with her four times a day at the moment to find out exactly how Holger is doing,” Beker stated. Embracing his new role as Holger Rune’s performance coach, Beker talked about how he coordinates with the 20-year-old’s mom over phone calls. “It’s all a puzzle that we have to put together so that the boy plays his best tennis,” he added. He also touched upon his aim, which is to sharpen the player’s skills to bring out the best. (H/T: Eurosports)
Boris Becker draws parallels between Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune
The six-time Grand Slam singles champion, Boris Becker, who has previously coached the current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, will be training Danish player, Holger Rune for the rest of the 2023 season.
“Holger is a rough diamond that needs polishing. I like his emotional outbursts. I’ve already coached a player who was sometimes not completely at his wits on the court: Novak Djokovic. But that’s allowed,” Becker revealed in an interview with Eurosports.
He further stated that World No. 6 needs to show understanding, apologize for his mistakes, and work with concentration again. Expressing confidence in the plan, Becker said that he followed the same mantra during his largely successful career.
