Former World No. 1 Boris Becker empathizes greatly with Britain’s 20-year-old tennis sensation Emma Raducanu. Boris and Emma have one thing in common. They both won a grand slam when people least expected them to do so. Becker won Wimbledon in 1985 as an unseeded player and merely 17 years of age. Emma Raducanu is the only qualifying player to win a Grand Slam Title and the U.S. Open in 2021. She was only 18 years old when she achieved the feat.

Boris Becker, however, worries about Emma Raducanu’s future in light of her recent surgeries. Raducanu had both her wrists and an ankle fixed through surgery. She is currently recovering and will skip the French Open. In an interview with the Guardian, Becker passed a frightening statement for Raducanu.

He said that “The surgeries that she has had are, in my opinion, career-threatening.Emma Raducanu is a double-handed player with an aggressive play style. She has a powerful backhand and forehand too. Hence Boris Becker also added, “Having surgery on your playing wrist, and as a two-handed player, the other wrist – and then on your ankle – is tough to bear for a young woman.”

Boris Becker is already in France ahead of the French Open. He is one of the Eurosport experts who would present his analysis and thoughts on various happenings during the tournament. An ex-coach of Novak Djokovic, he would be watching with attention whether the Serb takes the championship in the absence of Rafael Nadal.

Boris Becker has been a subject of hate while he was an active player and later due to his bankruptcy and other controversies. Becker’s entry was very sensational, being a 17-year-old unseeded German. He made tennis a rage in Germany. Though Emma Raducanu’s entry to the big stage was equally sensational, she couldn’t follow up her success with more success. Post U.S Open, the 20-year-old Briton has failed to maintain good form.

And in a world where social media is omnipresent, Emma Raducanu gets a lot of hate for not performing well. She has had several injury-ridden matches where she retired. She has also had several early-round exits after her win at the US Open 2021.

The crowd seems to target Raducanu consistently for not backing up her success with more success. Becker understands how difficult it is to play the sport after tennis fans have marked you as the scapegoat. The 55-year-old German said, “Tennis is a completely different game when you go into court and you have nothing to lose.” He feels that if the fans support you, then tennis is easier. “Anybody can play then(when you have support). It’s a whole different sport when you become the hunted.”

Here’s hoping that Becker’s fears about Raducanu do not come true for the Britisher, and she bounces back to claim more tournaments as is deemed for her talent.
