Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios and former German legend Boris Becker have been making headlines for quite a while now due to their recent clash on social media.
Just recently, things seemed to cool off between the two after the former World No. 1 sent out a peaceful message on his social media handle, wishing the Australian a speedy recovery. However, it seems that Boris Becker is still not ready to let things go so easily.
The German once again decided to reignite their clash as he expressed his opinions in a podcast with ‘Das Gelbe Vom Ball’.
All these players make it possible for Nick Kyrgios not to play tennis at all this year and still be able to make a living from tennis. He stated
The World No. 192 sparked an online battle with the six-time Grand Slam title champion as he started comparing generations of tennis athletes together. This did not impress the German legend one bit, as he took offense to it and retaliated on his social media. He said that the older generation of players was the reason why the tour is so successful currently.
You have to have respect for the past and simply say thank you out aloud that these old pros existed, because without them the tennis circus would no longer exist. He further stated
Nick Kyrgios is quite popular for his straightforward and bold nature, which has often landed him in a string of controversies. The World No. 192 has been missing in action for a long time and has also withdrawn from the upcoming 2024 Australian Open, citing injury troubles.
However, he remains connected to the sport, as he recently took up a role as an analyst and a commentator for Tennis Channel.
A summary of the social media battle between Nick Kyrgios and Boris Becker
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist recently started a social media battle with the retired tennis professional. He expressed his feelings regarding the older and slower format of the game back in the day and how players like Boris Becker could not have handled and adjusted to the newer and more fast-paced nature of the game in today’s time.
This did not sit well with the six-time Grand Slam title champion, who turned to correct the Australian’s statements. Things took an ugly turn as Nick Kyrgios brought up a cheeky dig at the German’s time in prison after he questioned his credibility.
Things had died down for a while as the German stepped up to end their feud, but he recently again raised his opinion on the importance of the older generation of tennis players in the current lot and how, if not for them, the sport would not have the money and publicity that it has today.
