Former German tennis ace and Holger Rune’s coach Boris Becker who worked with Novak Djokovic for a significant period and helped the Serbian win as many as six Grand Slam titles, has been left speechless at Djokovic’s performance in the 2023 season. Becker’s head seems to have blown out of proportion as he struggles to comprehend the Serb’s zeal to play and win at 36 years of age.
As Novak Djokovic finished the 2023 season with three Grand Slam titles, two ATP Masters titles, and an ATP Finals title, Boris Becker is in awe of the Serbian’s athleticism. The German has heaped massive praise on Djokovic while expressing disbelief at the source of constant motivation for the 36-year-old.
Boris Becker also hailed Djokovic as the dominator of the current tennis scene while counting the big titles won by the Serbian in 2023.
You're not really meant to play tennis like that at the age of 36. When does the guy get tired, or when does he run out of motivation? Novak is the dominator of the tennis scene - he has won three out of four Grand Slams [in 2023], then came second in that fabulous Wimbledon final against [Carlos] Alcaraz.Boris Becker said to Eurosport.
Boris Becker hoping for the gap between Novak Djokovic and others on the tour to narrow
While hailing Novak Djokovic for his prowess and dominance over his opponents on the tour, Boris Becker also hoped for the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune to push the Serbian further and narrow the gap between the best player on the tour and the others.
Becker shared his prediction for Djokovic in 2024. The German believes that Djokovic will win a couple of more Grand Slam titles. However, he also expects the younger lot to make things tough for the veteran.
In other words, I still expect Djokovic to win a Grand Slam or two. But I also believe that Alcaraz and co. will more often throw a spanner in the works. I hope that this rivalry between the most successful player of all time and the rest of the tennis world continues for a long time, because we tennis fans and amateur players benefit from it.Boris Becker claimed.
Notably, Novak Djokovic has entered the 2024 Australian Open as the top seed. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz is the second seed. With Rafael Nadal also returning, the first Grand Slam of the year is expected to be a tight-knit affair.
