23-time Grand Slam title champion Novak Djokovic avoided a scare on Friday as he came back from two sets down to defeat his Serbian counterpart Laslo Djere in the third round of the US Open 2023.
Djokovic defeated the 31st seed 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete his 8th win from 2 sets down in Grand Slams. In the final set, Djokovic dug deep into the reservoir of his stamina and tired out Djere, who still had great shots and proven stamina but not enough to pass the 2nd seed.
Next up Djokovic is scheduled to face the Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo, who is unbroken so far this tournament. The Croatian had a rather hilarious take on Djokovic’s lifestyle and success. “It’s who they are and I give them credit for that. Nole, Federer, Nadal – everyone has their own way of life. Djokovic can’t go partying after every trophy he wins – he’s won so much, he would have become an alcoholic! Everyone has their own path, who am I to judge, we all do what we want, feel and consider best for ourselves,” Gojo said talking to the press at the US Open.
Before this tournament, the 25-year-old Croat had won only one Grand Slam main draw match in his career. He started his US Open in the qualifiers and has won six consecutive matches, losing only one set to Hamad Medjedovic in the first round of qualifiers.
His biggest career victory to date came against an in-form Mackenzie McDonald in the second round (6-3,6-4,6-4). The Croatian pro is certain to break into the top 100 for the first time in his life after the US Open.

Novak Djokovic sends a message to his opponents after a statement comeback win
“I think the message is sent to the rest of the field that obviously I’m still able to play five sets deep at night. Coming from two sets down always sends a strong message to the future opponents,” Djokovic said to the press, talking about his comeback win against Laslo Djere in the third round. The 2nd seed went on to say he’d much rather win a match in straight sets than going all the way. Djokovic’s top challenger and the world no.1 Carlos Alcaraz got the better of him in 5 sets in the Wimbledon final.
The Serb took a toilet break after going 2 sets down. Talking to Brad Gilbert in an on-court interview, Djokovic said, “I did a pep talk in the mirror & kind of laughed at myself because I was so agitated.. I had to force myself to lift myself up”
Djokovic’s upcoming opponent Gojo will enter the Top 60 at the close of the Flushing fortnight, should he get an upset win. Gojo called the opportunity to face off with Djokovic on the big stage of the US Open “an amazing opportunity”. This will be the first head-to-head encounter between the pair.
