Former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep is currently suspended from all tennis activities. The Romanian’s test samples from the 2022 US Open had the presence of roxadustat, a banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Following the results of the test, Halep was immediately suspended. If she is indeed found guilty, she could face a ban of up to four years. While the player has pleaded innocence, it could be a long time before she can actually clear the charges from her name.
With Halep’s season ending after the US Open, the Romanian’s rest period will now be spent in proving her innocence. With the new season still two months away, Halep will hope for a quick investigation and trial in order to be cleared to play in the next season.
Serena Williams’ fans bash the double standards following Simona Halep’s case
Halep become the second high-profile player to be caught in a doping case. The other player was 5-time major winner Maria Sharapova. The Russian had been caught taking a medicine for years which was banned years later which led to Sharapova’s suspension from the Tour for a while.
In the middle of this, fans of Serena Williams have been quite upset. With many supporting Halep and vouching for her innocence, a section of fans gave a thought to what the situation would have been had it been the case with Williams.
It’s common knowledge that Williams is one of the most tested players for doping and performance enhancers. Williams had even complained about excessive tests and being the only one tested for. While her extraordinary performances and feats brought her titles, they also saw her getting called to the medical rooms as well.
Some fans even brought out the racism angle. With both Sharapova and Halep fair-skinned as compared to Williams, fans did not spare that angle as well, calling the tennis fraternity racist for the partial treatment between the players.
