Former professional tennis player and world-famous coach Brad Gilbert has been one of the major influences on tennis over the past few decades. Described by Andre Agassi as “the greatest coach of all time”, Gilbert won 6 Grand Slam titles with the American legend. Gilbert has also coached star British tennis player Andy Murray and Big serving American Andy Roddick. Brad Gilbert recently took up coaching duties again as he became the new coach of American teen sensation Coco Gauff.

After an early exit in last month’s Wimbledon Championship, Coco Gauff decided to make use of Gilbert’s expertise and hired him as her consultant. The decision bore instant fruits as the teen won last week’s Washington Open title, beating Maria Sakkari in the final. There was a notable improvement in her forehands. However, her coach wasn’t entirely happy with the ranking points she won for the title. Taking to social media platform X, the coach expressed his dissatisfaction with the WTA points awarding system and compared it with the ATP system.

He wrote, “Wonder why @atptour 250 is 250to winner 500is 500 1000 is1000 very simple, on @WTA a250 is280 to winner a 500 is 470 to winner Coco last week and a1000 is 900 to winner hmm.” A clear dig at the point disparity.

The points awarding system in tennis has always invited scrutiny due to the complexities involved with it. Some fans have even argued that the system makes little sense. Meanwhile, Gauff will look forward to adding points to her ranking as she hopes to go one step further from US Open 2021 finish and win this year’s title in her home grand slam.

After tasting success alongside Brad Gilbert, Coco Gauff said she plans to continue with him in her coaching team. Earlier, she said that it was a trial and not something that she would say is permanent.

Talking to the press, Coco said, “Originally we just, you know, said, Let’s see how this week goes, you know, how everything goes. I’m thinking that it’s pretty obvious the differences that he and Pere have made in the short amount of time, and I like the way the team dynamic, everyone is getting along, so that’s the most important part.”

Gauff recently played in the National Bank Open Canada. She was defeated in the quarter-finals by her good friend and doubles partner Jessica Pegula.
