21-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal confirmed his place in the finals of the 2022 French Open after an unfortunate end to his semi-final match against World No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Having won a lengthy first set that lasted for 91 minutes and ended at 10-8 in the tiebreaker, Nadal was pursuing another tiebreaker in the second set serving at 5-6.

Having fired a forehand down the line, Zverev’s attempt to reach the ball saw him hit the ball outside after he twisted his ankle and fell to the ground screaming in pain. The match had been played for over 3 hours by then and the second set was yet to complete giving all signs of the match turning into a classic. Zverev’s injury however ended the match prematurely as after being taken to the locker room on a wheelchair, he returned on crutches to thank the crowd and chair umpire announcing his forfeit.

As per reports of the Marca, Nadal has decided to not play the grasscourt season for a second season running as his foot continues to trouble him. Having played only two clay tournaments prior to the French Open due to his stress fracture in his rib, Nadal has decided to not force his body on the surface and take a much-needed break and return for the hardcourt season post this year’s 2022 Wimbledon Championships.

Another thing that works in the Spaniard’s favour is the Championships offering no points that further make it easy for him to take the decision of skipping a Grand Slam. With the ATP and WTA not backing down from their decision to remove the ranking points, many top players might skip the Wimbledon this year like Nadal to rest up after a gruelling claycourt season which demands a lot physically.
